The Lokpal has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to register a First Information Report against Customs Officer Anthony Raj at Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli. The order, issued on Monday, follows allegations that the officer misused passenger passports to purchase tax-free liquor, causing the government a loss of several lakh rupees.
The complaint alleges that Anthony Raj, who served as the Customs Officer at the Bengaluru airport and air cargo complex, forcibly obtained passports from international travelers. He allegedly used these documents to buy various brands of alcohol from the airport’s tax-free shops, paying with his own debit and credit cards. The complainants state that he provided gifts to the passengers who cooperated with him. This practice, reportedly continued over several weeks for personal gain, resulted in significant tax evasion and financial loss to the state exchequer.
In connection with the case, the Lokpal bench had instructed the Central Vigilance Commission to conduct a preliminary investigation and submit a report on February 13. The commission submitted its report on July 28. After reviewing the preliminary investigation findings, the Lokpal directed the CBI to file an FIR and initiate an inquiry against Anthony Raj.
