Akash and Nagarathna, a couple residing in Kammanahalli, died from smoke inhalation after becoming trapped on the first floor of a building during a fire at a gas refilling shop on the ground floor. The incident occurred on Saturday night around 8:30 PM in the Ganganagudi police station limits. The couple, who worked at an Indian Oil petrol pump, were unable to escape as the fire spread rapidly, leading to their deaths.
Police stated that locals reported a foul smell from the building on Monday, prompting an inspection that revealed the couple’s bodies. An FIR has been registered against the shop owner, Sabeek Pasha, and the building owner, Hinaayat Ulla, on charges of negligence. Sources indicated that more than 20 gas cylinders exploded in a chain reaction after a gas leak from one cylinder, causing the fire to engulf the shop. The couple, who were in their room on the upper floor, could not get out in time.
Police are investigating allegations that the shop was illegally selling petrol and kerosene in addition to gas refilling services. The shop owner had been selling auto mobile parts, various oils, and cylinders for several years. A team from the Karnataka State Electricity Board (Bescom) and the fire department, along with police, inspected the site. Deputy Commissioner of Police Nagash of the North West Zone stated that the preliminary investigation found no evidence of a cylinder explosion causing the accident. Legal action will be taken after reports from the fire department and Bescom determine if a short circuit or another source caused the fire.
